PRINCIPLES OF ENGINEERING
DESIGN (POE) - 462
1 Year = 1 Credit
Grade Level: 10-12
POE is a course designed to help students understand the fields of engineering and
engineering technology and their career possibilities. Engineering areas such as
hydraulics, pneumatics, gearing systems, pulleys and structural supporting such as bridge
building units and many others are modeled in a shop setting to resemble real world
applications. POE helps students learn how engineers and technicians use math, science
and technology in an engineering problem-solving process to benefit people. Units of
study include energy and power, materials and structures, control systems, statistics and
kinematics. NHS is a PLTW Certified School. Students adequately completing the PLTW
course series are eligible for college credit at PLTW participating universities. NCAA
Approved Course
CIVIL ENGINEERING &
ARCHITECTURE (CEA) - 463
1 Year = 1 Credit
Grade Level: 10-12
Use 3D modeling software to create and test your own residential and commercial
designs. Units of study include materials and systems, structural design, cost/efficiency
analysis, storm water management, site design, utilities and services, building codes, and
architectural styles. Civil Engineering and Architecture is appropriate for 10th, 11th or
12th grade students interested in careers related to civil engineering and architecture.
New building plans look impressive onscreen, but how would that cool structural design
you developed stand up to a flood, earthquake, city inspector, or historical commission?
What is your vision for the 21st century? NHS is a PLTW Certified School. Students
adequately completing the PLTW course series are eligible for college credit at PLTW
participating universities.
PLTW Capstone - 464C
1 Year = 1 Credit
PR
Grade Level: 11-12
PLTW Capstone is an open-ended research course in which students work in teams to
design and develop an original solution to a well-defined and justified open-ended
problem. Teams draw on the knowledge, skills, and interests of each member, as they
perform research to select, define, and justify a problem. After carefully defining the
design requirements and creating multiple solution approaches, student teams select an
approach, create, and test or model their solution prototype. As they progress through
the problem-solving process, students work closely with experts and continually hone
their organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, creative and problemsolving abilities, and their understanding of the integration of processes such as the
design process, experimental design, and the software development process. At the
conclusion of the course, teams present and defend their original solution to an outside
panel.
